Public Computers Public computers and free Internet access are available at the library during open hours. Users are required to red and agree to the Internet Use Policy established by the library Board of Trustees. Use is limited to 1/2 hour when there are other patrons waiting.
To use a computer, you must have a general understanding of computers and Windows applications. The Library staff is not able to train you in these programs. A printer is available for use at 20 cents per page.
Parents are advised to supervise their children's Internet sessions and are responsible for their own children's use of e-mail.
Complete copies of the computer policies and procedures are located near the computers.
Wireless Internet Password-protected wireless internet access is available for $1 per day. Password is changed daily. Remember - the password is good for no less than 24 hours. The WiFi is on 24/7 and coverage goes all the way down to the beach and beyond.
Library Cafe Etiquette A teleworker "touchdown" spot is any place with wireless access that isn't a home or office. When coming to "work" at the library, either in the computer space or meeting room, or in the main reading room, as with any public setting, rules to apply, even if they are largely unspoken:
Tip Big - We keep the lights on for you, the computers and wireless network running smoothly (mostly!) and answer your questions as quickly as possible. When you go to a coffee shop you pay for coffee or a meal to rent your table—any donations to your library are welcome in this location. Give donations to whoever is staffing the desk, or put them in the big "Volunteer Late Fee" container.
Take it Outside - Keep cell phones and PDAs on vibrate, and when they do buzz, head straight for the door.
Don't be a Hog - It's fine to keep your things piled on a table when you step out for a breath of fresh air, but not if you plan to be away for a while.
Be Careful Who You Trust - Because thieves and hackers work fast, take important hardware and documents with you. We may live in Northern Michigan, but the internet is an international gig.
Keep Your Eyes to Yourself - Resist the temptation to sneak a look at neighboring computers. Despite the privacy warnings, everyone seems to occasionally do their banking or bills in a public setting - go figure.
NO GAMES - The computers are a busy place in the library. So use your half hour any way you like, but when time is up, exit in a timely fashion (See "Don't Be a Hog" further up the list.)
Reference Services Library staff is available to answer your questions in person, by phone or by e-mail.
Interlibrary Loan If the library does not own a particular item, registered patrons can order it through Interlibrary Loan for a cost of $2 peritem. Loan periods and delivery times vary.
Tax Forms The library provides both federal and state tax forms to the public.
